Decide the split before the pick.

Choose the mix first. Equity, debt, gold. That one call sets how bumpy the ride is and most of why your outcome lands where it does. The fund inside each sleeve is the smaller decision.

The famous ninety percent is about variability, not magnitude. It does not say ninety percent of your return comes from the split. It says the split explains most of how much your returns swing over time.

Rebalancing is how you keep the split you chose. Set a mix once and never touch it, and within two years it has quietly drifted into a different mix you never signed up for.
You can burn a weekend picking the perfect fund and settle the split in one Tuesday afternoon. The Tuesday afternoon decides more. The brochure sells the pick. The math pays the mix.
