[Path 16 2 of 16](/learn/path-16/)India VIX for beginners: what it measures and what it does not[Next 16.3](/learn/path-16/module-16-3-solving-for-implied-volatility)

Monday 30 Mar 2026. India VIX closed at 27.89, its highest close from 1 Jul 2025 to 10 Jul 2026, the window this lesson reads. Nifty closed at 22,331.40, 12.3% under its close of 13 Feb. Then Wednesday 8 Apr: VIX at 19.70, down 29.4% from the peak, and Nifty at 23,997.35, still 5.8% under its 13 Feb close. The fear had gone out of the price. The loss had not gone out of the index. I read India VIX before I read any option price. It tells me how big the moves are priced to be. It does not tell me which way. Every figure here comes from NSE end of day files and is dated, so nothing is live and nothing is a view on what comes next.

3By the end you can

1. Turn an India VIX reading into a rough Nifty range for a month and for a day.
2. Say what NSE builds the number from, and three things it does not measure.
3. Explain why VIX and Nifty usually move opposite ways without VIX being a signal.

## The idea, plainly

Think of a road. India VIX tells you how bumpy the road is expected to be. It does not tell you where the road turns. A high reading means big swings are priced in. A low reading means small ones. Left or right is not in the number.

### What does India VIX measure?

NSE works it out from the best bid and ask quotes of Nifty options: out of the money calls and puts of the near and next month expiries. The answer is the volatility those prices imply for the next thirty calendar days, quoted as a yearly percentage. It looks forward through option prices. It does not look back at what Nifty did.

India VIX is read off option prices, not off past Nifty moves

The method in four steps. NSE publishes the full calculation in its India VIX white paper. Source: NSE, India VIX index description and white paper. As of 16 Oct 2026.
A yearly figure is hard to feel. Turn it into a month with one division.

One month move, % ≈
VIX ÷ 3.5

Read one more paragraph, 72 words
The divisor is the square root of about twelve, the number of thirty day periods in a year. Apply that percentage to the index to get points. For one trading day divide the yearly figure by about 16. Read the answer as one [standard deviation](/learn/glossary#standard-deviation) on a bell curve: two months in three should end inside the range, one in three outside. Real markets have fatter tails than a bell curve.

### What does it not measure?

* **Direction.** A VIX of any size is silent on up or down.

* **Past moves.** That is historical volatility, taken up in [module F23](/learn/path-16/module-16-1-historical-vs-implied-volatility).

* **One option's price.** The at the money IV of the June chain on 10 Jun 2026 was 15.0%, against a VIX of 15.63. VIX blends many strikes and two monthly expiries.

### What does a high India VIX mean?

There is no danger line. A reading is high or low only against its own history. In the same window India VIX closed as low as 9.15 on 26 Dec 2025 and as high as 27.89 on 30 Mar 2026. So is a VIX above 20 dangerous? It prices a one month move of about 5.7% either way. That is a bigger swing than most months hold. It is not a verdict.

| India VIX close | Reading | One month move |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Lowest, 26 Dec 2025 | 9.15 | 2.6% |
| 10 Jun 2026 | 15.63 | 4.5% |
| Highest, 30 Mar 2026 | 27.89 | 8.0% |

What a high reading changes is the price of an option. It costs more to buy and pays more to sell, because bigger moves are in the price. The worked example below puts rupees on that.

### Can I trade the India VIX?

You cannot buy the index itself. It is a number worked out from option prices, not something that changes hands. NSE launched futures on India VIX on 26 Feb 2014. A futures contract has its own price and its own expiry, and it is not the index. Those contracts sit outside this module, and nothing here is a view on where the VIX goes.

### How are India VIX and Nifty related?

On most days in opposite directions. When Nifty drops hard, buyers pay up for protection, option prices rise and the VIX rises with them. When the drop slows, that demand fades and the VIX eases, even while the index is still well below where it was. The two charts cover the same dates.

## Worked example: what 10 Jun 2026 priced in

On 10 Jun 2026 India VIX closed at 15.63 and Nifty at 23,214.95. Divide the VIX by 3.5 and it prices a one month move of about 4.5% of the index. For a single trading day, divide by 16: about 0.98%. Thirty calendar days later is 10 Jul 2026, so that is the date to check.

| Step | What we read | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | India VIX close, 10 Jun 2026 | 15.63 |
| 2 | Nifty close, 10 Jun 2026 | 23,214.95 |
| 3 | One month move, VIX ÷ 3.5, share of the index | 4.5% |
| 4 | One month move, index points | 1,037 |
| 5 | Range for 10 Jul 2026 | 22,178 to 24,252 |
| 6 | Nifty close, 10 Jul 2026 | 24,206.90 |
| 7 | Change from 10 Jun, share of the index | 4.3% |

The same option pair costs more of the index when India VIX is higher

Read 2 more paragraphs, 165 words
Nifty closed inside the range, 45 points short of the top of it. One month proves nothing. A fair range misses about one month in three. Whether VIX is a good forecast over hundreds of months is the question [module F23](/learn/path-16/module-16-1-historical-vs-implied-volatility) sets against realised volatility. The tool after this example places a reading against its own year.

The same fear shows in what options cost. On 7 Apr 2025, with India VIX at 22.79, the at the money call and put of the monthly expiry cost 4.29% of the index together, with 17 days left. On 10 Jun 2026, at 15.63, the pair cost 2.77% with 20 days left. On 11 Jun 2025, at 13.67, it cost 2.09% with 15 days left. The fearful session had the dearest pair even with fewer days to run than 10 Jun 2026. Days count too: fewer days left make a pair cheaper, which is part of why 11 Jun 2025 is lowest.

## The common mistake

The belief: VIX rising means the market will fall, and VIX falling means it is safe. VIX does move against Nifty on most days, so the belief feels earned. Test it on the dates above. From 30 Mar to 8 Apr 2026 the VIX fell 29.4% while Nifty stood 5.8% under its 13 Feb close. A falling VIX was not a repaired market. Now the other side. On Tuesday 7 Jul 2026 India VIX closed at 11.65, lower than on most days from 1 Jul 2025 to 10 Jul 2026. The next day Nifty fell 2.1% and the VIX jumped 26%. A low VIX did not make it safe. VIX prices the size of the moves. It reacts to a fall. It does not call one.

## Key takeaways

* India VIX is the volatility Nifty options price in for the next thirty days.
* It is a yearly percentage. Divide by about three and a half for a month.
* It shows how big moves are priced to be, never which way.
* A reading is high or low only against its own history.
* VIX and Nifty usually move opposite ways. VIX is a mirror, not a signal.
* When VIX is high, an option costs more to buy and pays more to sell.
