An iron condor caps the loss beyond its outer strikes, and the cap costs part of the premium

Profit and loss at expiry for one lot of an iron condor on the 30 Jun 2026 Nifty chain, priced at the settle prices of 10 Jun 2026. A short strangle at the same middle strikes has no cap on either side. Source: NSE end of day data, computed by RupeeCase. As of 10 Jun 2026.
A short strangle sells an out of the money call and put. An iron condor adds a bought call and a bought put further out, which caps the loss and reduces the premium. Both are short volatility structures, so an index move toward one side is the event an adjustment is meant to handle.

The usual adjustments are rolling the threatened side to a new strike, adding a wing on that side, or closing the tested leg and keeping the other. Each one realises part of a loss or pays new costs, and each one moves the breakevens. The chart shows an iron condor, which is a strangle with its wings in place.

Adding a wing is the only change on this list that caps the loss. It also reduces the credit, because the bought option costs premium. A roll moves the risk rather than removing it, and it adds brokerage, STT and margin on the new legs.

Check the position before and after on the same dated chain. Compare the payoff at expiry, delta, gamma and vega together. An adjustment that eases one side can add exposure on the other.

Adjustments do not make a strangle safe. A gap move can pass the new strikes before a trade is possible, and the costs of several small adjustments can add up to more than the premium that started the trade. The chart uses a dated NSE chain.

**Before you trade.** Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore. How do I adjust a short strangle or iron condor?Adjusting a short strangle or iron condor means changing the position after the index has moved toward one side, by rolling a leg, adding a wing or closing part of the trade. Each adjustment changes the risk and adds costs, and none of them removes the risk of the original position, so the useful check is the payoff and the Greeks after the change. Wrong as stated. An adjustment moves or limits risk and adds costs. It does not remove the exposure of a short volatility position to a large move.
