A gap is small only if it is larger than every cost in the chain

Steps from a price gap to a retail result. The STT rates are those from 1 Apr 2026. Source: NSE contract specifications and NSE circular on STT rates from 1 Apr 2026; computed by RupeeCase. As of 1 Apr 2026.
Arbitrage is an ordinary market trade, not a licence. A retail account can place both legs of a cash and futures trade, so the question is whether the price gap left after costs is large enough to pay. For index futures the gap is the basis. The costs are the STT, fees, GST, stamp duty, the spread on each leg, the impact of buying a basket and the funding of the cash leg.

The flow below follows one gap from the two prices to the result. The same steps apply to an index, a stock or a pair of futures.

Retail faces limits that institutions do not. A cash basket of many stocks is hard to build at small size, and borrowed money or margin has its own rate. Faster traders close small gaps quickly, so a gap on a screen can be gone before a retail order arrives.

SEBI's Aug 2026 study covers individual traders' results across equity F&O. It finds that 87.7% of individual traders made a net loss in FY26. It does not measure arbitrage, so it says nothing about how arbitrage fared.

Placing both legs by hand is an ordinary trade. Orders placed by software fall under SEBI's retail algo framework, which the algo legality page covers.

Arbitrage funds are a different product, with their own rules and costs. This page does not say whether any product suits a person.

**Before you trade.** Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore. Is arbitrage still possible, or legal, for retail in India?Arbitrage is an ordinary market trade that a retail account can place, so the rules do not ban the idea, but the trade only pays when the price gap left after every cost is positive. For most retail sizes the gap is smaller than the costs and the funding, so the answer depends on the numbers of each trade rather than on the word arbitrage.
