NIFTY and SENSEX swapped expiry days on 1 Sep 2025, after SEBI limited expiries to Tuesday or Thursday

1. 13 Nov 2024**Last BANKNIFTY weekly**SEBI's one weekly index per exchange starts on 20 Nov 2024. NSE keeps NIFTY.

2. 4 Mar 2025**NSE plans a Monday expiry**A move off Thursday, planned from 4 Apr 2025.

3. 27 Mar 2025**NSE defers the Monday move**Deferred as SEBI opens a consultation on expiry days.

4. 26 May 2025**SEBI: Tuesday or Thursday only**An exchange's equity derivatives expire on one of the two days. SEBI says spacing the days lowers concentration risk.

5. 17 Jun 2025**Tuesday for NSE, Thursday for BSE**SEBI agrees the day each exchange proposed. NSE moves off Thursday and BSE moves off Tuesday.

6. 1 Sep 2025**The swap takes effect**Contracts expiring on or after this date use the new days: NIFTY on Tuesday, SENSEX on Thursday.

Dated steps from SEBI's circular of 26 May 2025 and the NSE and BSE notices that followed. Rule history, not market data. Source: SEBI circular of 26 May 2025; NSE circulars NSE/FAOP/66938, NSE/FAOP/67338 and NSE/FAOP/68589; BSE notice 20250617-11. As of 16 Oct 2026.
Two SEBI rules set the calendar. Under the circular of 26 May 2025, all of an exchange's equity derivatives expire on one day, Tuesday or Thursday, and each exchange picks its own. SEBI's stated reason for spacing the days is lower concentration risk. The second rule is one weekly benchmark index per exchange. NSE chose NIFTY and BSE chose SENSEX. Monthly and quarterly contracts expire on the last Tuesday of the month on NSE, and on the last Thursday on BSE.

The history explains the mismatch in older screenshots. Until August 2025 the NIFTY weekly expired on Thursday and BSE's expiry day was Tuesday. NSE had planned a move to Monday, then deferred it in March 2025. SEBI agreed the day each exchange proposed, Tuesday for NSE and Thursday for BSE, so from contracts expiring on 1 Sep 2025 the two exchanges swapped days.

Bank Nifty is the index that lost its weekly. That weekly ended in November 2024. Its monthly and quarterly contracts expire on the last Tuesday. If an expiry date is a trading holiday, the expiry moves to the previous trading day on NSE and to the previous working day on BSE.

The NIFTY expiries listed on 10 Jun 2026 were 16 Jun, 23 Jun, 30 Jun, 7 Jul, 14 Jul, 28 Jul, 25 Aug and 29 Sep 2026, and every one of those dates is a Tuesday. Read the expiry date from the contract file, because the calendar is set by circulars and holidays, not by habit.

**Before you trade.** Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore. Why is Nifty expiry on Tuesday and Sensex on Thursday, and why no Bank Nifty weekly? From contracts expiring on 1 Sep 2025, NSE's NIFTY weekly expires on Tuesday and BSE's SENSEX weekly on Thursday: SEBI lets each exchange pick Tuesday or Thursday, and the two exchanges swapped the days they had. Bank Nifty has had no weekly contract since November 2024, because SEBI allows one weekly benchmark index per exchange and NSE kept NIFTY.
