A long future gains and loses point for point, with no floor on the loss

Profit and loss at expiry for one lot of the 30 Jun 2026 future, bought at its 10 Jun 2026 price. The line does not stop at any level. Source: NSE end of day data, computed by RupeeCase. As of 10 Jun 2026.
Take the 30 Jun 2026 Nifty future on the 10 Jun 2026 chain. One lot is 65 units, and a long position gains or loses by the same amount as the index, point for point, with no floor. The chart shows that straight line at expiry.

A future needs margin, not the full value of the contract. The loss, however, is not limited by the margin. If the index falls far enough the loss can be larger than the money put up, and the broker will ask for more funds or close the position. Futures also settle to the market every day, so the gain or loss is paid in cash as it happens.

A long call of the same expiry works the other way round. Its loss stops at the premium paid, and its gain grows as the index rises past the strike. The cost is time. The premium falls as expiry nears, even if the index stands still, so a buyer can be right on direction and still lose money.

Neither product is easier by its name. The question is which loss can be carried. A future has no floor on the downside. An option has a floor, paid for in advance, and its value fades with time. The modules on futures and on option buying walk through both with dated examples.

**Before you trade.** Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore. Futures or options: which suits a beginner?Neither product is easier by its name: a future gains and loses point for point with no floor, while an option loss stops at the premium and its value decays with time. What matters is which of those two losses the trader can carry.
