Open interest in the 30 Jun 2026 futures fell on every session as positions rolled into July

Open interest in the 30 Jun 2026 futures, in units (the axis reads in lakh and crore), from 15 Jun to 30 Jun 2026. Over the same sessions the open interest of the later months rose, so the fall is mostly a roll, not an exit. Source: NSE end of day data, computed by RupeeCase. As of 30 Jun 2026.
The four names describe what open interest and price did on the same day, for the same contract. Price up with open interest up is a long build up, where new buyers are adding. Price down with open interest up is a short build up, where new sellers are adding. Price up with open interest down is short covering, where sellers close. Price down with open interest down is long unwinding, where buyers close.

Every contract has a buyer and a seller, so rising open interest means both sides added. The label guesses which side pushed, from the price move.

The chart above shows the 30 Jun 2026 futures from 15 Jun 2026 to the expiry. Open interest in that contract fell on every session after 15 Jun. Over the same sessions the open interest in the later months rose, and the roll share climbed from a small part of the total to most of it. So a falling number here is mostly positions moving into the July contract, not buyers and sellers leaving the market.

By expiry day, four fifths of Nifty futures open interest sat in the later months

Share of all Nifty futures open interest outside the expiring contract, from 15 Jun to 30 Jun 2026. It rose from about one in eight to four in five as positions rolled into July. Source: NSE end of day data, computed by RupeeCase. As of 30 Jun 2026.
The rule reads cleanly only for one contract on one day. Read the pattern on the same contract, not on all months added together, and check the roll before calling a fall an unwinding. Near expiry, most of the change can be roll.

The four labels are a reading aid, not a forecast. They describe what the day's positions did, and they do not say where the price goes next. The module on open interest and build ups works through the four patterns with a dated chain.

**Before you trade.** Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore. Long build-up, short build-up, short covering, long unwinding? The four patterns read price and open interest together, for one contract on one day: price and OI both up is a long build up, price down with OI up is a short build up, price up with OI down is short covering and both down is long unwinding. Near expiry, a fall in OI can simply be a roll into the next month, as the June 2026 window shows.
