Implied volatility on the Nifty moves across the record, so the price of cover moves with it

30 day constant maturity at the money implied volatility of the Nifty, in percent, daily, from 1 Jul 2025 to 15 Sep 2026. Computed from NSE end of day option prices. Source: NSE end of day data, computed by RupeeCase. As of 15 Sep 2026.
A tail hedge is cover for the large, rare fall, not for ordinary weakness. For a portfolio that tracks the Nifty, the usual tool is an index put bought far enough out that it keeps value through a sharp move. The premium is paid up front. If the fall does not come, the premium is the whole cost, and it is spent as time passes.

NSE lists Nifty options well beyond the monthlies: three quarterly and eight half yearly expiries, out to five years. Longer dated puts lose less time value each day than short dated ones, but they carry more exposure to implied volatility. The chart shows the 30 day at the money implied volatility on the Nifty over the record. When it rises, the same protection costs more, and when it falls back after a calm spell, the cover is cheaper. Buying cover after a volatility spike means buying at a higher price.

Two checks come before any purchase. The first is fit. Index puts cover the index, so a portfolio that moves differently from the Nifty keeps a gap, which the basis and beta pages set out. The second is roll. A put that expires before the risk does has to be replaced, and each replacement is a new price.

Protection has a long run cost. In the years when no tail arrives, the premiums paid can add up to more than the losses they prevented. That trade-off is the honest shape of tail hedging: a choice of what to pay for, not a free lunch.

**Before you trade.** Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore. Tail risk hedging in India: what do long dated Nifty options do?A long dated Nifty put pays most when the index falls far and fast, and its premium is paid up front and lost if the fall does not come. The price of that cover moves with implied volatility, so the cost of protection is not fixed from one month to the next.
