  01How it works

## In plain words.
Expenses grow with inflation to the target age; 25 times that year’s expenses is the FIRE number (the 4% rule turned around). Your savings and monthly investment are then projected at three returns: one you choose, the Nifty 50 TRI figure on this page with its date, and a fixed deposit rate you set as an assumption.

    The formula

`FIRE number = expenses x 12 x (1 + inflation)^years x 25``Projection = savings x (1 + i)^n + SIP x ((1 + i)^n - 1) / i``Income at 4% = projection x 4% / 12`

  02Worked example

## The default numbers, by hand.
Age 28 to 45, Rs 50,000 a month today, 6% inflation: the FIRE number is about Rs 4.04 crore. Rs 25,000 a month plus Rs 5 lakh at 12% reaches about Rs 1.89 crore, 47% of it.

| Input | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Monthly investment | ₹25,000 |
| Age now | 28 |
| Target age | 45 |
| Savings so far | ₹5,00,000 |
| Monthly expenses today | ₹50,000 |
| Inflation a year | 6% |
| Your return a year | 12% |
| Fixed deposit rate (assumption) | 7% |

| Result | Value |
| --- | --- |
| FIRE number (25 x yearly expenses) | ₹4.04 Cr |
| Your return | ₹1.89 Cr |
| Dynamic Asset Allocator, 45.18% (model, back tested CAGR as of 27 Apr 2026) | ₹73.00 Cr |
| Nifty 50 TRI, 9.8% (as of 27 Apr 2026) | ₹1.49 Cr |
| FD, 7.0% (assumption) | ₹1.11 Cr |

  03Key concepts

## What to know before you use it.

### The 25x rule
25 times yearly expenses is the 4% withdrawal rule turned around. It comes from US research on 30 year retirements; an early retirement can last 40 or 50 years, which the same research suggests needs a lower withdrawal rate.

### Lean and fat FIRE
Lean FIRE plans for basic expenses only; fat FIRE for a fuller lifestyle. The expenses input is the lever.

### Good to know

* Healthcare and insurance are worth planning separately for an early retirement.
* Rent or other income after FIRE reduces the expenses the portfolio has to fund.

  04Assumptions

## What the calculator assumes.

* Constant returns and inflation; the investment stays flat each month.
* The Nifty 50 TRI figure is the model window’s benchmark CAGR from lineup.json; the FD rate is an assumption you set.
* Past or back tested returns are not a promise of future returns.

  05Questions

## Asked about the FIRE calculator.
What is a FIRE number? The corpus that would fund your yearly expenses indefinitely under the 4% rule: 25 times those expenses at the time you stop working.

Does the 4% rule work for early retirement? The research behind it covered 30 year periods in US markets. Longer retirements have historically needed lower withdrawal rates.
