Value is the premium (options) or the price (futures) times the units traded. On an exercised option the tool adds STT on the intrinsic value and the SEBI fee on the settlement value; it adds no exchange charge on the exercise. Brokers round each charge, so a contract note can differ by a rupee or two. GST is not added on the SEBI fee here: that varies by broker. Closing a position is a second trade with its own charges, which is why each preset has two legs.

Rates from NSE circulars, dated on the page; the example prices are NSE end of day settlement prices of 10 Jun 2026. Not a recommendation, and this page cannot trade.

## How to read it

### Each leg is one order

A round trip is two legs, the entry and the exit, and both are charged. STT falls on the sell side of an option or a future, stamp duty on the buy side, the exchange and SEBI charges on both sides, and GST on the exchange charge and on brokerage.

### Per unit is what the market has to give back

Total charges divided by the units traded: the points of premium or price that go to costs before any profit. On a small premium it is a large share of the premium.

### Exercise has its own STT

A cash settled index option that ends in the money is exercised for its buyer. STT is then charged on the intrinsic value, at 0.15% from 1 Apr 2026 (it was 0.125% before), whatever premium was paid.

### Rates carry their date

The rate set in force is chosen at the top and its effective date is printed with the NSE circular numbers. Earlier sets show what the same trade cost before 1 Apr 2026. Rates before 1 Oct 2024 are not in this tool.

### Where it is taught

[The cost of a trade module](/learn/path-12/module-12-6-cost-of-an-fo-trade) walks through the same charges on a dated contract note.

## What it leaves out

Brokerage is not statutory: enter your own, and GST at 18% is added on it. Brokers may add platform or other fees, and round each charge. Tax on the profit is a separate matter, covered in [Learn module 11.2](/learn/path-11/module-11-2-tax-treatment-mfs-etfs-sgbs-bonds-and-fno). The tool does not model a future held to expiry, physical settlement of stock contracts or BSE contracts.

Why does a round trip cost more than the entry? The exit is a second order with its own exchange charge, SEBI fee and GST, and STT falls on whichever leg sells.

Is STT charged on both buying and selling? Not on options and futures. STT is charged on the sell side; on an exercised option the buyer pays it, on the intrinsic value.

Where do the rates come from? From NSE circulars: STT from the Finance Act 2026 (NSE/FATAX/73524, in force from 1 Apr 2026) and the exchange charges from NSE/FA/73061 (from 1 Mar 2026). SEBI's turnover fee is Rs 10 per crore, and stamp duty follows the Indian Stamp Act.
