  01How it works

## In plain words.
XIRR is the yearly rate that makes all the dated amounts, discounted back to the first date, add up to zero. Money invested early is discounted for longer than money invested late, so every amount counts for the time it was actually invested. There is no formula to solve it directly; the calculator narrows the rate down by bisection until the sum is zero.

    The formula

`Find r so that: sum of amount_k / (1 + r)^(days_k / 365) = 0``days_k = days from the first date to date k`

  02Worked example

## The default numbers, by hand.
Rs 3 lakh invested in five parts between Jan 2022 and Jan 2024, worth Rs 3.8 lakh in Jan 2026: the XIRR is about 7.7% a year on an absolute gain of 26.7%. Most of the money went in during the first two years, and the later instalments were invested for less time, which the XIRR accounts for.

| Input | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Dated amounts (YYYY-MM-DD, amount) | 6 dated amounts (the default list) |

| Result | Value |
| --- | --- |
| XIRR | 7.69% |
| Money put in | ₹3.00 L |
| Money taken out or held | ₹3.80 L |
| Net gain | ₹80,000 |
| Period | 4.0 years |

  03Key concepts

## What to know before you use it.

### Why not CAGR
CAGR assumes one amount went in on the first day. A SIP puts money in every month, so its CAGR from the first date understates the return; XIRR weights each instalment by its own time invested.

### Same as the statement figure
Fund statements and broker reports usually show XIRR for SIPs. Entering the same dates and amounts here should give the same figure, give or take rounding.

### Good to know

* Use the value today as the last positive amount, dated today.
* Dividends paid out are positive amounts on their dates.
* A very short period can give an extreme XIRR; annualising two months of returns magnifies them.

  04Assumptions

## What the calculator assumes.

* 365 day years; amounts on the dates given.
* The result is the money weighted return of these flows, not the return of the fund itself.

  05Questions

## Asked about the XIRR calculator.
What is XIRR in a mutual fund? The annualised return on a series of investments and withdrawals on different dates, such as a SIP. It is the rate that makes the discounted value of all the flows equal zero.

Why is my XIRR different from the fund return? The fund return is time weighted: it ignores when you added money. XIRR is money weighted: money added just before a rise counts more. Both are correct answers to different questions.

How do I enter a SIP?One line per instalment as a negative amount on its date, then the current value as a positive amount dated today.
