Dates of the SEBI circulars and exchange rules that set the framework. Rule dates only, with no market figures. Source: SEBI circulars of 4 Feb, 29 Jul and 30 Sep 2025; NSE standards of 5 May 2025. As of 16 Oct 2026.

The framework is SEBI's circular of 4 Feb 2025 on the safer participation of retail investors in algorithmic trading. The broker is the principal, and any algo provider or vendor acts as its agent through the broker's API. Every algo order that flows through that API carries an identifier from the exchange, so the exchange can see it and stop it.

Open APIs are not allowed. A broker may give access only through a client specific API key and a static IP that the broker has whitelisted, with OAuth based login and two factor authentication. Vendors must be empanelled with the exchanges, and the exchanges keep a kill switch that can stop orders from one algo identifier.

A retail investor who writes an algo personally is treated differently. The circular leaves the order rate threshold to the exchanges. NSE's implementation standards of 5 May 2025 set it at ten orders a second per exchange to begin with, and the exchange may adjust it after notice. At or below it, the algo runs through the broker's API without a separate registration. Above it, the algo is registered with the exchange through the broker, and a registered algo may be used by the investor's family: self, spouse, dependent children and dependent parents.

The dates moved. The rules were due from 1 Aug 2025, were pushed to 1 Oct 2025, and a circular of 30 Sep 2025 gave brokers that were not ready milestones to 3 Jan 2026. The framework applies to all brokers from 1 Apr 2026. Name the circular a page relies on, because dates and thresholds have changed more than once.

Before you trade. Derivatives trading carries a high risk of loss. SEBI's study "Profitability of Individual Traders in the Equity Derivatives Segment (FY25 to FY26)" (August 2026) found that 87.7% of individual traders in equity F&O made net losses in FY26, with aggregate net losses of Rs 91,685 crore.
