01How it works
In plain words.
The goal is grown by inflation to the year you need it. Existing savings compound towards it. The SIP covers the rest: the calculator solves the SIP formula backwards for the instalment that fills the gap.
The formula
Goal then = goal today x (1 + inflation)^yearsGap = goal then - savings x (1 + i)^nSIP = gap x i / ((1 + i)^n - 1)02Worked example
The default numbers, by hand.
Rs 50 lakh in today’s rupees, 10 years, 6% inflation, 12% return: the goal becomes about Rs 89.5 lakh, and the SIP needed is about Rs 40,300 a month, 40% of a Rs 1 lakh income. Set inflation to 0 and it falls to about Rs 22,500.

03Key concepts
What to know before you use it.
Today’s rupees
A goal priced today will cost more later. Planning in today’s rupees and adding inflation keeps the target honest.
The affordability check
The SIP as a share of income is shown with simple markers: under 20%, 20% to 30%, over 30%. A high share is a prompt to look at the horizon, the goal or the savings.
Good to know
- A separate SIP per goal keeps the tracking simple.
- For goals a few years away, the asset allocation calculator shows how short horizons limit equity in a textbook split.
04Assumptions
What the calculator assumes.
- One constant return and one inflation rate.
- Instalments at month end; no tax or costs.
05Questions
Asked about the Goal planner.
How do I calculate the SIP needed for a goal?
Grow the goal by inflation to its date, subtract what existing savings will grow to, and solve SIP = gap x i / ((1 + i)^n - 1) with i the monthly rate.
Should I plan with inflation?
For goals priced today, yes; the calculator adds it. Set inflation to 0 if the goal is already in future rupees.
