India VIX closed at or above twenty on nineteen sessions between 4 Mar and 13 Apr 2026
India VIX is NSE's measure of the volatility that Nifty option prices imply over the next thirty calendar days, quoted as an annual percentage. A VIX of twenty does not mean the Nifty moves twenty percent in a month. It is an annual rate, so the move it implies over a month, or over a single day, is much smaller than the headline figure.
A higher VIX means options cost more for the same strike and time, because the market is pricing more uncertainty. That is a cost to the buyer and a premium to the seller, who is paid for taking the risk and carries the larger loss if the move arrives. Margin also depends on volatility, so the same short position can need more capital on a high VIX day.
The chart marks the weeks in March and April 2026 when VIX closed at or above twenty, with its peak on 30 Mar 2026. VIX often rises on the days the index falls, which is why it is read as a fear gauge. That describes expected volatility, not the direction of the index.
The idea that a VIX above twenty means a fall is coming does not hold up in this series. The trap box sets out the claim and the verdict. The calculation of India VIX and the link between VIX and the Nifty cover the rest.
