NSE works out India VIX from near and next month Nifty options, using the out of the money calls and puts, with the forward level taken from Nifty futures and a money market rate for discounting. The answer is an annualised figure for the next thirty calendar days.

Read the number as a rough size, not a forecast. Divide the annual figure by the square root of twelve and you get a rough one standard deviation move for the next month. A high figure means options are priced for bigger moves. It does not say the index will rise or fall.

The two move in opposite directions on most days. Over that stretch India VIX rose on almost every day that Nifty fell by one percent or more. That is a pattern in the record, not a rule for the next session.

The number does not tell you what an option costs on a given day either. A premium also depends on the index level, the time left and the strike, so VIX is one input among several.
