Questions about options trading basics
What is an option, in simple terms?
A contract that gives the holder the right, not the duty, to trade the underlying at the strike price until expiry. The holder pays a premium up front; the writer receives it and carries the obligation.
What is the difference between a call and a put?
A call gains value when the underlying rises above the strike; a put gains value when it falls below the strike. The two story modules work each one through on a dated Nifty week.
Can an option holder lose more than the premium?
No. The most an option holder can lose is the premium paid plus charges. The writer's loss has no such cap, which is why writing an option needs margin.
What did SEBI find about individual F&O traders?
Its studies found that a large majority of individual traders in equity derivatives made net losses after costs, and that losses tend to repeat. Module 12.3 reads those studies line by line.
