Questions about algo trading rules in India

Is algo trading legal in India for retail traders?

Yes, through a SEBI regulated broker's API under the retail algo framework of the 4 Feb 2025 circular, with algo orders tagged by an identifier and access on a static IP with two factor login.

Does an own algo need to be registered?

Only above the order rate threshold, which NSE's standards set at ten orders a second per exchange to begin with. An algo offered to others must come from a provider the exchange has empanelled.

How is HFT different from a retail algo?

HFT depends on colocation and very low latency at the exchange; a retail algo sends orders through a broker's API, where order rate limits apply. Module 19.3 compares HFT, MFT and LFT.

Why do backtests often look better than live results?

Overfitting, look ahead bias, survivorship bias and missing costs all flatter a backtest. Module 19.1 and the question on biases list the checks to run before trusting one.
