01How it works

In plain words.

Listed shares and equity oriented funds held for more than 12 months give long term capital gains (LTCG). The first Rs 1.25 lakh of LTCG in a financial year is exempt, and the rest is taxed at 12.5%. Held for 12 months or less, the gain is short term (STCG) and taxed at 20%. Health and education cess of 4% is added to the tax.

The formula

Gain = (sell price - buy price) x quantityLTCG tax = 12.5% x max(0, gain - (Rs 1,25,000 - LTCG already used))STCG tax = 20% x gainTax with cess = tax x 1.04

02Worked example

The default numbers, by hand.

100 shares bought at Rs 500, sold at Rs 800 after 18 months: a Rs 30,000 gain, all within the Rs 1.25 lakh exemption, so no tax. Held 10 months instead: STCG tax of Rs 6,000, or Rs 6,240 with cess.

03Key concepts

What to know before you use it.

The rules since 23 Jul 2024

The Finance (No. 2) Act 2024 raised LTCG on listed equity from 10% to 12.5% and the exemption from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh, and raised STCG from 15% to 20%, for transfers on or after 23 Jul 2024. The Income-tax Act 2025, in force from 1 Apr 2026, carries the same rates.

The conditions

The concessional rates apply when STT was paid, which happens automatically on trades on a recognised exchange. Gains on shares bought before 1 Feb 2018 can use the grandfathered cost.

Good to know

  • The exemption is per financial year and does not carry forward if unused.
  • Losses can be set off against gains; the tax loss harvesting calculator shows how.
  • Surcharge on these gains is capped at 15% for high incomes; it is not included here.

04Assumptions

What the calculator assumes.

  • Resident individual; listed equity or equity oriented fund with STT paid; sold on or after 23 Jul 2024.
  • No surcharge; cess at 4%. Rates checked on 12 Oct 2026.
  • Education only; a tax adviser or CA can confirm your liability.
